Micromidas Researching Utilization Of Sugar Beet Waste As Biobased Feedstock

BRAG member Micromidas, combined with the Michigan Molecular Institute and Michigan Sugar Company, is focusing on a $150,000 Small Company Innovation Research (SBIR) grant from DOE with the aim of creating a tactic to convert sugar beet waste into helpful chemicals. After sugar continues to be obtained from sugar beets, the rest of the residue still contains a lot of sugars that may be changed into biobased PET. The introduction of biobased packaging materials, for example individuals championed by Coca-Cola, Heinz, and Proctor & Gamble, has led to an elevated interest in biobased PET that may match the price of oil-based PET. While scientific studies are still in early phases, it’s possible that additional work could continue “with an SBIR Phase II grant, that is $1,000,000.” More details can be obtained online.
